In my earliest days within the Archives, I had little sense of what secrets might be waiting. The shelves stretched endlessly then, as they still do, and I wandered more than I worked.
One particularly dreary evening, I heard the echo of voices, low and undulating, like a hymn reverberating across stone. I followed the sound, unsure of what I might find at its end. Admittedly, I was not yet accustomed to the variety of ways the Archives revealed itself. Were the voices calling me forth? Or warning me away? They were in a language I didn't understand, but I ultimately interpreted their meaning to be that of indifference towards myself. That was better than hostility, at least, so I pressed forward.
The corridor narrowed, twisted, and at last opened into a chamber I hadn't previously catalogued. There was an altar at its center, carved from dark stone and wrapped in roots. Dust covered every surface, but the air was thick with scent: wild fruit ripened past its time, cypress needles crushed underfoot, a resinous sweetness that lingered like incense burned long ago.
Whatever had been worshipped there had long since moved on. (I think.....I hope).
I called the scent Old Gods, an homage to the ancient deities that predate human history. The name seemed broad enough to cover all that could have been worshipped there - cosmic beings, mythological deities, eldritch overlords, or something else entirely.
At any rate, "Old Gods" seemed good enough a name for the Archives to remember it by. Hopefully, I didn't anger anything.
